The Breed

The Breed > Breed Articles of Interest Interview with breeder Marilyn Martin By Susan Hill Since 1985 Marilyn Martin has been breeding and showing Airedale Terriers. For Marilyn, showing a dog to its championship is important because this guarantees that a series of judges have evaluated that dog according to the breed standard. Thus the quality of the dog isn't based solely on Marilyn's opinion. The show ring is also a good place to evaluate a dog's temperament. For example, an aggressive dog will be excused. Marilyn always meets the stud dog that is a potential mate for her bitch to make sure it not only has the qualities that compliment her bitch, but also has a good temperament. Hip dysplasia is a problem in Airedale Terriers. It can occur even if a bitch with good hips is bred to a stud with good hips. Marilyn has her own guarantee for hips, which is written into the contract for all her puppy people. It is important for all potential puppy people to discuss this with her. Socialization is also very important for Marilyn. Beginning at 3 weeks of age, each puppy is given individual attention in new places away from the Mom and litter mates. Marilyn also does temperament testing, especially if any puppies are going to families with children, or where there is a person with a disability. "With each breeding I strive to breed the best possible Airedale and to keep the best to show and breed. No, I don't produce puppies just to sell to other people, but to breed the best all round Airedale that will shine in the show ring, and do well in obedience or hunting and working. Right now I am working with my bitch, Martha, in agility and we are having a blast!" Contact: |
