Interview with breeder Karen Copley

By Susan Hill

Karen Copley has been involved with Airedales since she was 7 years old. Without any kids to play with in her neighborhood, she made friends with a “mean, nasty” dog down the street, who turned out to be an Airedale, as well as Karen’s first dog. He lived to be 16 years old.

In the early 1980s she rescued a male Airedale from the Denver Dumb Friends League. This Airedale took Best of Breed at GDATC’s first Fun Match. He lived to be 14 years old.

Karen had always wanted to breed exceptional Airedales, who have sound temperaments and good structure. You should ask her about how she socializes her puppies and her techniques for house breaking.

Karen, who used to work as an obstetrics nurse, has established and now runs a company, called Whelpwise. This company specializes in helping breeders when they have a bitch that is whelping.
